Summer road trips are a great way to enjoy time together as a family. No one wants to be stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire, so it’s important to plan ahead before hitting the road. If you’re getting ready to head out of town, these tips will help you make sure you’re prepared for the highway.
Perform Regular Maintenance
When is the last time your vehicle got a tune-up? If it’s been awhile, you definitely want to get it checked out before your road trip. Get regular oil changes, check the battery, and have your tires rotated regularly to help keep your auto in tip-top shape. In the summer, you’ll want to pay extra attention to the air conditioning and coolant level to make sure that your passengers and engine stay comfortable in the hot weather. Check to make sure your headlights and brake lights are working properly.
There have been a number of vehicle recalls recently, so it’s also a good idea to check your Vehicle Identification Number here to see if your vehicle has been part of a recent safety recall.
Traveling with Children and Pets
If you’re traveling with small children, make sure they have the correct size car seat and that it is placed in the vehicle correctly for their size. Children under age 13 should ride in the back seat. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle.
If you’re traveling with your family pet, be sure that you have a way to transport your pet that is comfortable for it and distraction-free for you. Stop for frequent walk and water breaks to help your pet stay comfortable and hydrated on the journey. Do not leave your pet unattended in the vehicle. Hot weather can cause your vehicle to quickly reach dangerous levels for pets (and their humans), so exercise caution when traveling in the summer months.
Stay safe on the road this summer, and enjoy making memories!
