Perhaps not surprisingly, January is National Organization Month. After all, it’s natural to want to clear clutter and get to inbox zero this time of year. Many of us may even include getting organized in our goal setting for the year head.
While getting organized can have several positive effects, one of the best is improved safety. Knowing where things are makes it easier to access them when you need them, from tools to first aid kits.
Staying organized is also one of the most effective ways to help prevent employee injuries such as slips, trips, and falls. Let’s examine a few ways to get your workspace organized this January.
Start Organizing
Get started by sorting your inventory, equipment, tools, or other necessary items. Take the time to thoroughly clean equipment and make sure everything is in proper working order. Is it time to replace those scissors you use every day?
Next, group similar items together and decide where to keep them. Dispose of any trash and consider donating any items you no longer need. Depending on your workspace, it might be helpful to create labels so everyone knows where items belong.
Items that are used often should be stored so they are easy to access. When using storage containers, put the heaviest items on the bottom and the lightest items on the top.
Keep Safety Top of Mind
Important safety items such as fire extinguishers and first aid kits should be easily accessible. Replace them when they expire. Make sure everyone knows where they are. Ensure that smoke alarms and other safety mechanisms are working properly. Talk to your employees about where to go if there’s a fire or other disaster.
Regularly discuss safety procedures related to your specific work environment and make sure all employees are following the guidelines.
