Fall Prevention for Older Adults

Did you know that falls account for almost one-third of all non-fatal injuries in the US? Falling down results in minor injuries or embarrassment for some people, but for others, it can signal the need for lifestyle changes.

Keep reading to learn how falls impact older Americans and what to do to help mitigate the risk of falling.

Fall Injuries in Older Adults

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that falls among adults 65 and older caused more than 38,000 deaths in 2021. More than one in four older adults fall each year, but fewer than half tell their doctors. Three million older adults are treated in emergency departments each year for fall injuries. Falls are the cause of most traumatic brain injuries.

Aging can affect vision, strength, and balance, so adults 65 and older have a higher risk of falling. However, falling is often preventable. Taking some simple steps can help older adults prevent falls or recover faster if they do fall.

Preventing Fall Injuries

Practice balance exercises regularly to maintain physical strength. Check your risk for falling with this self-assessment from CDC and share the results with your doctor. Talk to your doctor about your personal fall risk and what you can do to be safer.

Get your vision tested annually and ensure your footwear fits properly. Some medications or combinations of medications can impact your balance and cause dizziness, drowsiness, or light-headedness. Discuss your prescriptions and over-the-counter medications with your doctor or pharmacy regularly.

Consider walking aids like canes or walkers if you’re concerned about falling. Keep the floor clear of throw rugs, electrical cords, clutter, or anything that might cause you to trip. Arrange or remove furniture to allow plenty of room for walking. Make sure stairs and hallways have good lighting. Put railings on both sides of the stairs. Outdoor areas should be well lit with walkways smooth and free of puddles or ice.
