It’s spring cleaning season which is a great reminder of the importance of cleaning product safety and poison prevention. Proper storage is key to keeping your kids and pets safe year-round!
Storing Cleaning Products
From liquid laundry packets to glass cleaner to bleach, brightly colored cleaning items may be particularly appealing to little ones. Items on counters and below kitchen and bathroom sinks are often at eye-level for kids, so be sure to store products like cleaning supplies and laundry packets out of reach and out of sight.
Although you might be tempted to decant your cleaning products into different containers, it’s not recommended. The best practice is to keep products in their original containers. Read product labels carefully and follow instructions for using and storing the products.
Additional Cleaning Product Safety Tips
Don’t mix products, as this can cause harmful gases. Try to schedule cleaning with chemicals for times when small children are napping or out of the house. Keep container caps tightly sealed when not in use.
When it’s time to dispose of cleaning products, make sure to do so carefully. Empty containers should be discarded in a sealed recycling or garbage bin with the caps on. If you need to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste such as cleaning chemicals, hydrogen peroxide, oil based paints, etc., check out your local recycling district’s information. You can learn more on the Southeastern Indiana Recycling District’s website.
