A new AARP and S&P Global survey finds that although caregiving benefits have improved, there’s still work to be done.
61% of the 48 million family caregivers in the United States are also working while managing caregiving tasks. They’re advocating for their loved ones, preparing meals, coordinating doctor’s visits, assisting with nursing tasks, and handling other caregiving duties in addition to their regular jobs.
Flexibility is Key
The report found that employer flexibility is of utmost importance for working caregivers. It seems to be improving—in 2020, 32% of working caregivers reported having some flexibility in their work schedules and the number rose to 45% in 2023—but it’s still a major issue for many caregivers.
Two-thirds of survey respondents said that they have difficulty balancing work and life responsibilities. 84% reported that caregiving had a moderate or high impact on their daily stress. And 27% shared that they had to shift from full-time to part-time hours or otherwise reduce their work hours due to caregiving responsibilities.
80% of respondents felt that companies are more likely to be understanding of childcare issues than adult caregiving responsibilities. 16% of working caregivers have turned down a promotion because of their caregiving commitments. Others have changed their schedules or taken additional time off to manage caregiving tasks.
Supporting Working Caregivers
The report identified several ways that companies can support working caregivers. Allowing for flexible schedules and locations, such as hybrid/remote work, can give caregivers the flexibility to work between caregiving duties. Proving access to support groups, career coaching, and financial advising resources can help caregivers navigate various challenges. Offering paid leave for caregivers or flexible leave that can be used to help with caregiving is another way to provide the flexibility that working caregivers need.
