Decreases in Traffic Fatalities, Including Pedestrian and Speeding-Related Crashes

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released early estimates of traffic fatalities in key subcategories for the first half of 2024. These estimates project a decline in nearly all subcategories, including pedestrian and speeding-related crashes, rollover crashes, and crashes involving occupants who were not wearing a seat belt.

Better Roadway Safety

The National Roadway Safety Strategy roadmap to address traffic fatalities and serious injuries and the Safe Streets and Roads for All program are recent efforts to reduce the traffic fatality rate. Safe Streets and Roads for All has funded projects in more than 1,600 communities since 2022. The program has supported roadway safety for about 75% of the U.S. population during that time.

Reducing Traffic Fatalities

When compared to the first half of 2023, fatalities in several key subcategories decreased in 2024. These include the following decreases:

  • 12% during out-of-state travel
  • 9% in ejected passengers
  • 8% on urban interstates
  • 7% in unrestrained occupants of passenger vehicles
  • 7% in passengers
  • 6% in speeding-related crashes

The NHTSA also announced early estimates of motor vehicle traffic fatalities earlier this year, which also showed a decline.
