According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 32 people in the United States die each day due to drunk-driving crashes. To put it into perspective, that’s one person every 45 minutes.
In 2020, 11,654 people died in alcohol-related crashes. Thousands of others were seriously injured.
December is National Drunk and Drugged Driving Prevention Month, also known as National 3D Prevention Month. It’s an important reminder to not drive impaired.
Don’t Drive Impaired
Driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs that affect your ability to drive (whether illegal, prescription, or over the counter) can quickly end in a serious car accident. Driving impaired or riding with someone who is impaired can have very serious consequences, including the risk of killing yourself or someone else.
In addition to life-threatening injuries, driving impaired can mean jail time, the loss of your driver’s license, higher insurance rates, and a whole host of expenses from court costs to car repairs.
Holiday Season Dangers
The time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is one of the deadliest seasons of the year because of alcohol-related crashes. Drinking and driving after holiday parties is one of the main culprits. Taking a few precautions can help keep you and everyone else safe on the road this holiday season.
Plan ahead and determine who will be the designated driver before the event begins. If you’ve been drinking and don’t have a designated driver, stay where you are or call a rideshare, taxi, or friend/family member to pick you up.
If you’re hosting an event, make sure guests leave with a sober driver. Be sure to offer non-alcoholic beverages during the party.
