Spring brings plenty of showers to southeastern Indiana, so it’s a good time to review strategies for driving safely in wet weather.
Visibility
Heavy rains can cause poor visibility, making it difficult for drivers to see other vehicles as well as obstructions in the road such as fallen trees and branches. This can be a recipe for disaster when you’re behind the wheel.
Avoid driving in severe weather whenever possible. If you must drive in heavy rain, be sure that your headlights are on to help other drivers see your vehicle. Allow extra space between your car and the vehicles on the road ahead of you to allow for more time to react.
Hydroplaning
Be prepared for hydroplaning in rain and anytime the road is wet. If you are driving too fast in wet weather, your automobile’s tires may fail to grip the surface of the road, which makes steering and braking very challenging. Reducing your speed is the best way to prevent your car from hydroplaning. Avoid using cruise control in rainy weather.
If You Skid, Don’t Panic
If you feel your car begin to skid in wet weather conditions, don’t panic. Continue to steer your vehicle in the direction you want it to go. Avoid slamming on the brakes, as this will cause you to lose control.
