When’s the last time you really looked at your vehicle’s tires? Keeping your tires in good condition can prevent automobile accidents, provide better fuel economy, improve handling of your vehicle, and more.
Tire Safety Tips
Check your tire pressure at least once a month. Be sure to also check the spare—in the event of a flat tire, you don’t want to discover that your spare is in poor condition! Are your tires wearing evenly? Avoid overloading your vehicle; do not carry more than the maximum load recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. If you must drive over a pothole or another object on the road, be sure to slow down.
Check Tire Pressure
You can find the recommended tire pressure and vehicle load limit on tire placard in your vehicle. These are attached to the edge of the vehicle door, doorpost, glove box, or inside of the lid of the trunk.
Tires can lose air over time. Use a tire pressure gauge to check the pressure monthly when the vehicle has been unused for at least a few hours (ideally parked overnight or all day) to ensure that you get an accurate reading. If the tire pressure is too high, slowly release air until you reach the correct pressure. If the pressure is too low, refill your tires to the correct level at a service station.
Tread Safely
You can check your tire treads to see if it is time to replace your tires. The treadwear indicators are raised sections spaced throughout the bottom of the tire tread grooves. When these sections appear even with the outside of the tread, it’s time to get new tires.
Keeping your vehicle well maintained can help you and your family stay safer in an automobile accident. Tires that are kept in good condition allow you to respond more quickly to unexpected circumstances on the road.
