The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently announced that the Takata airbag recall expansion has almost doubled the number of vehicles affected to over 32 million.
A November New York Times report claimed that Takata was aware of airbag defects for years before filing paperwork with regulators. The NHTSA asked that the recalls be expanded to the national level. Honda and Ford recalled several million vehicles in December 2014. By May 2015, the recall was expanded to include 33.8 million vehicles, which included approximately 17 million recalled previously by automakers.
At least 8 fatalities and a number of serious injuries have been attributed to Takata airbag ruptures on the driver or passenger side of affected vehicles. The airbags were mostly installed on vehicles with model years from 2002-2008, but may affect vehicles manufactured as recently as 2014. The airbag recall affects the following manufacturers:
- Honda
- Ford
- Chrysler
- Mitsubishi
- Subaru
- General Motors
- Toyota
- BMW
- Mazda
- Daimler
- Nissan
