The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that about 400 defective products are recalled each year. Defective products are products that do not meet safety standards and/or do not perform the function for which they are intended.
Unsafe and defective products include playpens, prosthetics, car and truck tires, medical devices, space heaters, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, household items, and more.
Companies who put profits ahead of safety by not properly testing products or by cutting corners to cut costs need to be held responsible. Each year people are injured or even die because of this disregard for consumer safety and wellbeing.
A few examples of recent consumer safety recalls show the importance of consumer safety standards. Dream on Me recalled their 2-in-1 Bassinet to Cradle because the product can pose a fall and suffocation hazard to infants; Cosco recalled convertible hand trucks due to a wheel hub that can separate or break and eject pieces while being inflated, causing potential harm to bystanders; SCOTT recalled Vanish Evo Bicycle Helmets due to a head injury hazard. All of these items pose a threat to consumer safety while performing the functions for which they were created, making it necessary to recall them.
Product defects fall into three categories: design defects, manufacture defects, or marketing defects. If someone you love has been injured due to a defective or unsafe product, any company in that product’s supply chain may be held accountable.
