Tips for Driving Safely at Night

As the clock falls back, shorter days present new driving risks. It’s dark earlier, and driving at night has its own challenges.

Fatal Crashes Peak on Saturday Nights

Fatal crashes peak on Saturday nights, according to a National Safety Council (NSC) analysis of National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration data. NSC notes that fatigue, difficulty seeing at night, impaired drivers, and additional traffic are some of the risks you may face when driving at night. Depth perception, color recognition, and peripheral vision can be compromised in the dark. Headlights from an oncoming vehicle can temporarily blind you.

Drive Slower at Night

Your visibility is limited to about 250-500 feet when driving at night, which means you have less time to react to obstacles and changes. Driving slower gives you more time to react. Make sure your headlights are clean and aimed correctly. Dim your dashboard and keep the windshield clean. Avoid look directly into oncoming lights.

Being able to see well in low-light conditions becomes more challenging as you age. The American Optometric Association recommends that older drivers get annual vision exams and slow down when driving in low-light conditions. Minimize distractions and try to limit driving to daytime hours when possible. Talk to your doctor about side effects of any medications you’re taking.

Don’t Drive Drowsy

Early morning, mid-afternoon, and the middle of the night are common times for crashes that are a result of driver fatigue. Losing two hours of sleep affects your driving like you’ve had three beers. Tired drivers are three times more likely to get into a crash if they’re fatigued.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends getting seven or more hours of sleep a night. Don’t drive if you’ve been awake for 16 hours or more. Travel during times you’re normally awake, and pull over to take a nap if you’re drowsy. Stop every two hours to rest.
