The National Safety Council estimates that eight people die and hundreds of others are injured each day in automobile accidents related to distracted driving. April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month, which serves as a reminder that being distracted while driving puts everyone at risk.
Three Major Types of Distractions
There are three major types of distractions drivers should be aware of: visual, manual, and cognitive. For most drivers, it’s easy to recognize and disengage from activities that cause visual distractions or physical adjustments that make it difficult to pay attention to the road, such as turning to speak to someone in the back seat or taking a hand off the wheel.
Cognitive distractions can be a bit trickier to identify. Using a cell phone while driving or simply being fatigued before getting in the car are examples of cognitive distractions to look out for. Hands-free cell phone use isn’t risk-free.
If your eyes, hands, and mind aren’t focused on driving, the chance that you’ll make mistakes that can result in injuries or even death increases. Understanding these three major distractions can help you avoid distracted driving.
Be a Role Model
Did you know that teens who observe their parents driving while distracted are 2 to 4 times more likely to drive while distracted? Show your children how to drive by modeling the focused driving behavior you’d like to see them use.
If you’re a passenger in a vehicle being driven by a distracted driver, don’t be afraid to speak up. Offer to make calls, send text messages, or look up directions to prevent the driver from being distracted.
Need a refresher on best practices for safe driving? The NSC recently updated its Online Defensive Driving Course, which is designed to motivate drivers to change risky driving behaviors and attitudes about driving while distracted.
