Last month, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) approved a new federal safety standard for high chairs. The standard is intended to improve safety for all high chairs, including those used at home and in restaurants.
From January 2011 through September 2017, the CPSC received 1,842 incident reports related to high chairs. 271 of those reports involved injuries. The most common reason for reports included falls when a child attempted to climb into/out of the high chair, chair tip over due to movement, or component failure (such as tray or lock failure).
The new federal safety standard for high chairs includes requirements for rearward stability and warning labels. It also states that high chair should have a passive crotch restraint and a three-point restraint system.
High Chair Safety Tips
When using a high chair, be sure that it is positioned away from walls, counters, and tables. Keep items that are sharp, hot, or breakable out of the baby’s reach. Do not leave a child unattended in a high chair.
Be sure to fasten all safety straps and harnesses right away when seating the child in the high chair. Lock the tray table in place.
